Aubrey

Shortly after Thanksgiving Aubrey’s mom began to notice that She wasn’t using her right arm very much and scheduled a visit to her pediatrician. After a quick exam she told us that she knew something was wrong but she wasn’t really sure what. She suggested that we take her in the next week to get a few scans done. On December 2nd, 2018 her mom noticed that not only was her right arm weak, but she was also starting to limp and showing signs of a weakness in her right leg also. At the advice of a nurse we brought her into the emergency room. Early in the morning of December 3rd, 2018 we got the most devastating news that any parent could get, Aubrey had a brain tumor in her Thalamus, deep in her brain and on top of her brain stem. She had a biopsy done in Baton Rouge and her scans were shown in-front of a “tumor board” at St. Jude in Memphis. Of the several doctors, radiologists, and chemotherapy specialists in the room Dr. DeCuypere spoke up and said that he was confident that he could remove the tumor with surgery, which we were told wasn’t an option in Baton Rouge. So on January 11th, 2019 we traveled to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee and met with Aubrey’s team. Dr DeCuypere her neurosurgeon said that her tumor was the size of a golf ball and was pushing on her optic nerve. He then informed us that he’d need to cut her optic nerve, which in turn would leave her blind. On Monday, January 14th, 2019 Aubrey’s doctors operated on her tumor for about 6 hours and are sure that they had removed all of her tumor! Her amazing neurosurgeon informed us that he was able to move her optic nerve around and save it! She has very limited usage on her right side and struggles to wiggle her toes. She has many months of physical therapy ahead of her to regain control of her right side. Right now Aubrey has physical and occupational therapy twice a week. Aubrey and her mom will be traveling to Memphis every 3 months for the next few years. Aubrey has 3 sisters and 2 dogs that she loves dearly. We are thankful for all of the prayers, well wishes and help as we travel through this difficult journey!
